11. Bec's Idee Fixe

I felt so useless in the car, not that I would be much help outside either.

And if this is what it would come to, I’d never imagined my death like this. A little more fighting then just sitting, and then a little more fighting to stay alive, rather than letting Edward and Jacob do the work for me.

I was wondering why Bec hadn’t attacked already. It was like she was copying us, just in a sickly way. I turned my attention to my Edward standing outside the other window, a statue among the rustling trees.

“Jasper?” He asked. I saw a few shapes positioned among the trees. One of them nodded.

Bec materialized a few feet away from the window, just where I had pictured her standing. Her shoulders were drooping; she didn’t look like she was going to kill, and like something had been taken out of her.

“What the hell did you do to me?” She growled. Her voice had changed only a bit, but somehow it was more like she was just mad, rather than ready to drain the life out of me.

Edward chuckled.

“Thanks, Jasper.”

Jasper only nodded. He then turned to Bec.

“Too bad you couldn’t win, huh?”

“That’s what you think, Cullen.”

Bec closed her eyes, when she opened them again, they were furious.

“Jasper!” Edward shouted.

“I can’t! She’s too…”

There was no way to describe her emotion. Furious, but for no visible reason. Homicidal, because of me.

"No," Edward said to Jacob. "Im not leaving until she is dead— or at least very far away."

I began to realize that I was the key reason for all of this, and I knew that I should have known all along. I was always the key magnet for danger, and all that relates. It was now obvious that my observation was amiss, and this was clearly like James. It was only bloodlust that drove her further and further down the path she was following.

Something vibrated in my pocket, causing a reflex scream. Edward's eyes flew to me and I pointed to my phone and apologized. He growled but nodded.

"Hello?"

"Hey, Bells, how's camping?"

"Oh yeah, its really fun."

I stressed to think of things that you do on a camping trip, but the fact that I had never been on one wasn't helping. I know you went on hikes, but that was all that was stored under camping in my brain. Camping, Camping! I wracked my brain for any information I hadn't noticed before. Nothing. Hiking would have to do.

"What did you do?" And there's the question.

"Well we went on a hike yesterday and…"

Bec materialized some inches away, that triggered another scream.

"What is it?" Charlie asked frantically.

I winced. Another lie I'd have to tell.

"Oh, never mind, I just saw a spider."

"Oh…well, uh, so where are you now?" He asked with a bit of suspicion, as if he might actually know what was going on.

"Oh, im outside, with the rest of them. I gotta go, bye." I gave him no time to say goodbye, because he would ask why, and then I would have to lie again.

12. Illusory Escape

Edward’s face lit up with a smile, but his eyes remained angry. “Jasper,” He whispered, and his brother’s head turned to him. “Come over here.”

I watched Jasper creep behind the trees till he was just inches from Edward.

He then began whispering things lower than before, so my ears would not allow me to hear it.

Jasper nodded, then smiled too.

I began to wonder if Bec was even here anymore. She hadn’t reappeared, or said anything, or even tried to kill any of us.

Jasper stared into the air, like he was concentrating. Edward was doing the same thing, but now Esme was no where to be found. An ear-piercing scream came from no where in particular. Bec then appeared a few feet away from Edward and didn’t stop screaming. She began clawing at the air madly, and then fell over. She got up immediately and lunged at nothing. Edward laughed and nodded. Bec kept up her wild movements until Edward nodded. As soon as he did, Jasper ran. Edward got in the car with one of his super-human movements.

“Drive!” He demanded. I went as fast as I could without blurring everything around me. I was sure I was going far over the speed limit, but I was trusting Edward to tell me when a cop was around.

Luckily, nothing. We pulled into the hotel parking lot. I finally found the time to breathe again, and ask him how he had managed what he’d done.

“How did you do that?”

He chuckled. “Oh, it was easy. I don’t even know why I didn’t think of it before. Remind me to thank Jasper later.”

13. Double Trouble

“What did you do though?” I asked.

“Lets wait till we get inside, shall we?”

“Fine.”

As soon as I was sitting with my arms crossed in aggravation that he wouldn’t just tell me in the car, and he was pacing back and forth, he started to talk.

“Well you already know how Jasper can manipulate emotions to make people happy, sad, calm… and so on. Well I thought if he could do that, why couldn’t he make someone…hmm… lets say hallucinate. So it was simple really: Jasper made her think she was getting killed by me and him, so, as far as Bec knows, she’s dead.”

Even though all the things she had done were malicious and bad, I couldn’t help but think that was obscenely mean…and a little stupid. How long could someone---especially a vampire—think they were dead, when everyone around them was not totally oblivious?

“How stupid do you think she is? She’s going to figure out what you did, and that’s just going to give her a reason to want to kill you!” I yelled furiously.

“It doesn’t matter when she finds out that she’s not actually dead---we only needed that for the time when she wouldn’t stop…whatever she was doing. It was just a diversion, and a clever one, might I add.”

Edward’s phone rang, and he picked it up with another super-human movement, answering it on the first ring.

“Hello?”….”Your kidding! Then how did Alice see them?”…. “Yes, actually. Apparently she thought she was smarter, and for the time being, is on the losing end.”…. “Okay. Bye.”

Edward put his face in his hands and growled.

“Who was it? What happened?”

“It was Carlisle. There’s a pack of werewolves with those creeps, and I don’t know how Alice saw them if they were with them… but were going to ask the dogs if they’ll help us, because there is no way that seven vampires can face whatever size there coven is plus a pack of werewolves.”

“But there has to be a reason Alice saw them anyway. Maybe the werewolves are only with them when they are ready to attack. If there was some way to find them without them knowing we were looking, then we could have the werewolves on our side and they might not be ready.”

“That is a good idea, but I see a couple flaws in that. Number one is: what if the werewolves wont help us? Number two is: there isn’t really a way to find them, without them finding us too.”

Chapter 14: Chasity Crace

Note: Really, really, really short. Sorry about that, but i need a little thinking time counting on the fact that im just playing it by ear, and hopefully this will build up a little suspense.



Edward got a strange look on his face. “I’ll be right back.”

He kissed me and left, and I watched him go.

Edward was back with in seconds, which had not permitted me time to think about the situation.

“Carlisle called Jasper—we have to stay for about 3 more days, and don’t worry about Charlie, Carlisle already asked him if it was okay, and he said yes, but now Bec isn’t the worst we have to worry about.”

“What’s worse?” My eyes widened, and I wasn’t sure, but I bet I stopped breathing for a couple seconds.

“Chasity Crace.”

Chapter 15: Blue Streak

Note: Again, its short. And this MAY NOT be all of it, i may post more later.


“Who’s Chasity Crace?” I swallowed and could feel the familiar lump forming in my throat.

Edward scowled. “Well, number one is she is not a vampire, which at first made me hopeful. I don’t know what she is, but…”

“…but?” I squeaked. How could this be such a huge problem if Chasity Crace isn’t even a vampire?

“She can control people’s thoughts…so…in plain English, she can turn people against each other—no questions asked.” Edward started pacing back and forth.

“How do you know that she can do that?”

“Because she is so bad she has a reputation on the internet.” He nodded when my eyes widened. “According to internet, 700 years ago, a Chasity Crace turned a whole town against another, and well…” He nodded, confirming what I had assumed. He picked up again shortly after. “No one knows what she is, or where she came from, but she’s older than Carlisle, so you know she’s got to be smart and probably wont fall for things as easy as Bec did. There, lies our issue—how to handle her. We could easily come up with something like that again, but it wouldn’t put her off at all. Physically attacking her is all we’ve got, and her control over everyone doesn’t help the situation.”

“Wait, how is she a problem? If she’s not a vampire, then she doesn’t care about my blood. I didn’t even know of her, so she probably didn’t know of me, or you, or your family. What’s her motive?”

“She’s a freak, that’s her motive.”

I chuckled despite the situation. “What exactly do you mean?”

“Well Bec was attacking you because of the obvious reason, your blood, and Chasity Crace has no motive, she’s just sick.”

“Does she have anyone with her? Like a…non vampire-y coven?”

“Not that I know of, but I doubt she could manage everything she’s done alone, so probably. If there is someone with her, were definitely in deep trouble.”

“But why is she targeting…us?” I felt really confused when I thought of all the things that had tried to kill me and/or the Cullens. James, he was trying to get my blood. Victoria, just wanted revenge.

“Like I told you before, she’s just a freak. She’s got nothing against us, she just found us. How, well that part’s past me.”
