People look at me funny

When I tell them

“I am a creature of the night.”

The light in their eyes leaves,

And a laugh paints itself on their lips.

I take a step forward.

They don’t know whether or not to take

Two. steps. back.

So they stay and wonder a while,

Thinking

Wondering

How on earth I could possibly be something they couldn’t

Ever

Comprehend

But more likely going back to every time

I didn’t smile.

Why in the minutes past midnight,

They hadn’t seen me do anything

Out of the ordinary.

Why we passed by a church on our way back

And I didn’t

Disappear

Poof. Gone. White as a rabbit.

In a spurt of

“demonic damnation”

But they don’t doubt for a second when they see

The flash in my eyes

The hunger in my expression

And the absolute terror

When I pull the corners of my mouth up into

A smile.

Because then they know

They really

Know

That this is the last night of their lives.
