i don't think anyone pressured them to change... i mean, a lot of fans got really mad when they started to change, and then people realized- WAIT! CHANGE IS GOOD!
i dunno why they would TRY to sound like anything... it may sound like they're trying to sound like the beatles, but i think that it's more that they listened to a little to much beatles and this is what came out... _________________ http://stelaclaudi.livejournal.com/
from day one i talked about getting out
but not forgetting about
how my worst fears are letting out
he said why put a new address
on the same old loneliness
when breathing just passes the time
until we all just get old and die
now talking's just a waste of breath
and living's just a waste of death
and why put a new address
on the same old loneliness
and this is you and me

I'm a huge Beatles fan and if it sounded like they were just copying I would be mad. But they made it their own. _________________

Havent listened to it yet.
I'm iffy on buying it, because of all the hate.
But I see most of it coming from Fueled-by-Ramen fanatics, who tend to have a completely opposite taste in music from me.
So, who knows? Maybe I'll love it... _________________ myspace.com/hot_daddy_pants |

Time Magazine gave it a B. I'd give it an A but a B's pretty good. _________________

i wish there was some sort of transition between the two records, it would have helped.
they are always talking about how much they've grown and yada yada yada. listening to the beatles doesn't make you more mature, there's no need to brag about it. _________________

meh. i don't really think it's about maturity... i think they really just... changed.
and if they had a transition... well, it would be helpful to know that no one brainwashed them, or made clones and locked the real ones in a cold, dark basement with nothing to eat bu-

I think their taste in music grew and changed. They're older now. There's nothing wrong with that. The album is amazing. _________________

i don think that they 'changed' if you look at the AFYCSO you can see that it had tons of different influences in it that made it different and amazing. its the same with P.O. only in my opinion they got better influences. _________________ ------------------------

"changed" and "got better influences" are kinda synonymous in this case =/

I fianally listened to it!!
My professional reveiw:
Panic at the disco's second album Pretty. Odd. is a much more lighter taste to the music scene than previously thought. Pretty. Odd. is an album that has obviously been highly influenced by many great bands such as The Beatles, The Who, Queen, The Beach Boys and Silverchair. Pretty. Odd. is extremely different to the band's first album " A Fever You Can't Sweat Out", the band have changed immensly over the past few years and this album shows it. This album also puts people into a happier mood instead of their first album which Ryan (the lyricst) was a pessimest. This album will bring them a whole new audience who like indie music. Overall I give Pretty. Odd. a 9/10.
My teenie review:
OMG I FINALLY HEARD IT IT'S SO AWESOME, I really love the way that they did it all and how it's just put together and ohhhh I love it and can't wait for the concert (=== Rate: 9/10 _________________ "I'm pretty and she's odd, and together we're Pretty.Odd." -Gemz
I hate the way I look and I despise the way I sing

I don't know why some people (not so much here, but on myspace etc.) complain about them being influenced by The Beatles. DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY BANDS HAVE BEEN INFLUENCED BY THE DAMN BEATLES?! It's cause that band is feckin' huge, and for all the right reasons - major tunage, relateable lyrics and innovation. Durr.
It's not like they've TRIED to sound like the Beatles. I don't think very many bands, especially one as unique and obviously passionate about what they do as Panic, would TRY to copy another band. You can hear the many new influences, like the Beatles and the Beach Boys and the Stones etc, yes, but overall Panic is still Panic. They're not really remotely like any of those three bands. They have added a unique sound to their influences and they've always had that slight theatrical element to their music and lyrics which makes it more unique.
I kept hearing Pretty. Odd. being compared to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and honestly I think the only semi-large similarities are a.) an introduction song b.) strings and c.) horns. But there are hundreds of albums out there with those three things. It ain't that rare to find.
ANYWAY, now that that rant is out of the way, let me give ya'll my opinion on the actual album!
Pretty. Odd. is freaking fantastic. Loads and loads better than Fever. While Fever was quite good and still has a couple of really fabulous tunes (namely But It's Better If You Do and There's a Good Reason...), melodies were not put together nearly as smoothly as they are in Pretty. Odd. and many lyrics came off as pretty pretentious. It was just too... jammed packed, a bit crowded. Pretty. Odd., however, is a huge improvement, melodically and lyrically, and content-wise it's quite different. Also, I always tend to perfer more acousticy stuff rather than electronics, and the string arrangements are gorgeous. Harmonies are perfect. EVERYTHING IS PERFECT. There is not one song, out of FIFTEEN TRACKS, that is just "pretty good" or less. All of them are GREAT and beyond. And that is how all albums should be. I love the versatillaty as well - not just compared to Fever but on just this album itself. You've got all different-sounding stuff, from the theatrical Do You Know What I'm Seeing? and When the Day Met the Night to the jazzy I Have Friends in Holy Spaces to the folky Folkin' Around to fantastical harmonious Behind the Sea to the whimsical Mountain in the Middle of the Cabins to the rockybluesy She's a Handsome Woman and Mad as Rabbits and... christ I could go on but I won't. This post is already a massive essay.
I think my faves are Behind the Sea, I Have Friends in Holy Spaces, Do You Know What I'm Seeing? and When the Day Met the Night.
Basically... Pretty. Odd. is damn good. The end. |

^ Here Here! I totally agree.
I love how they sound, I'm not complaining about any influences. I think it's great when a band can branch off of another while still making their music unique and their own. I think that takes a lot of effort.
Pretty. Odd. is pretty freaking fantastic. _________________
